Honeypot Troubleshooting

/honeypot Does Not Appear

  • Confirm the folder is plugins/honeypot.
  • Confirm AthenaBot 2.2.0 or newer is running.
  • Check startup logs for config validation or plugin load errors.
  • Restart AthenaBot after changing command or subcommand names.
  • Confirm the member passes permissions.honeypot_command.

The Warning Is Not Posted

  • Confirm honeypot_channel is assigned through Athena setup.
  • Confirm enabled and warning.post_on_ready are true.
  • Check that AthenaBot can view the channel, send messages, and embed links.
  • Run /honeypot post to see the immediate result.
  • If pinning is enabled, grant Manage Messages.

Messages Do Not Trigger The Honeypot

  • Confirm the message is being sent in the exact honeypot_channel.
  • Confirm the plugin is enabled.
  • Bots never trigger the honeypot.
  • Check punishment.ignored_user_ids and ignored_role_ids.
  • Confirm AthenaBot can receive message events in the channel.

Athena Moderation Mute Fails

  • Confirm punishment.mute_method is athena.
  • Confirm the moderation plugin is installed and loaded.
  • Check AthenaBot logs for honeypot: Athena moderation mute errors.
  • Confirm the moderation plugin can mute the target member and that AthenaBot’s role is above the member.
  • Use mute_method: "discord" only if you want a direct timeout instead.

Athena mode does not fall back automatically. When it fails, the incident log shows the punishment with (failed).

Discord Timeout Fails

  • Confirm punishment.mute_method is discord.
  • Grant AthenaBot Moderate Members.
  • Move AthenaBot’s role above the target member’s highest role.
  • Use a positive duration no longer than 40,320 minutes.
  • Server owners and members above AthenaBot cannot be timed out by the bot.

Kick Or Ban Fails

  • Grant Kick Members or Ban Members for the selected action.
  • Confirm AthenaBot’s role is above the target member.
  • Check the incident log for the (failed) marker.

The Trigger Message Remains

  • Confirm punishment.delete_trigger_message is true.
  • Grant AthenaBot Manage Messages in the honeypot channel.
  • Check channel-specific permission overrides.

No Incident Log Appears

  • Assign honeypot_log through Athena setup.
  • Confirm AthenaBot can view the log channel, send messages, and embed links.
  • Check that the configured channel still exists.
  • Incident logging is optional and does not control punishment execution.

The Member Does Not Receive A DM

  • Confirm punishment.dm_user is true.
  • Members can disable server DMs; the plugin ignores DM delivery failures and continues with the punishment.

Dashboard Changes Do Not Match Local JSON5

When dashboard-backed configuration is enabled, MongoDB values can override the local file. Make the change in the dashboard or confirm which source AthenaBot loaded before editing configuration/honeypot.json5 again.
